Frequently asked questions

FAQs about our service
What areas do you cover?

We cover the whole of the UK.

What are your operating hours?

Our hours of operation are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. We are closed on Bank Holidays and at weekends.

How do I book a collection?

Please complete the collection form online. Alternatively, you can email us directly at contact@zerotechwaste.com or via 0800 494 7778 where our staff can take these details for you.

Can I bring items to you?

Yes – customers are welcome to bring items to us during normal operating times (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). There is no charge for dropping equipment to us in person, unless the items are in the list of chargeable items. You are also welcome to pallet ship items to us, with prior arrangement.

Can you give me more information about your services?

Visit our how it works page for information about our services, and an explanation of the process.

Are you registered with the Environment Agency?

Yes, we hold all necessary Environment Agency licenses to operate. See our Why us page for details about all our licenses, plus more information about our company.

Are you really carbon-negative? How?

Yes, we are! We use electric vehicles for as many IT asset collections as possible, and support a robust tree-planting carbon offset program. We calculate our carbon emissions at every point of operations – miles driven, parcels posted, even the electricity to make our cups of tea – and make sure we contribute towards sequestering more carbon than we create.

As well as helping other organisations and businesses reduce their eco-footprint by collecting and recycling redundant IT equipment, we want to make sure we are a positive force for environmental change in the world.

Find out more about our carbon-negative IT recycling services.

How do you destroy the data when recycling assets?

We destroy data on all devices we handle, safely and securely. Any data-bearing media is wiped using a multipass binary overwipe. If it cannot be wiped, due to non-functionality or damage, we physically destroy the media. Whichever method is used, the data is completely and irretrievably eradicated. Visit how it works for information on our data destruction methods, and an explanation of our processes.

What will happen to my equipment after it is collected?

We transport all your IT assets back to our secure warehouse for processing. Any IT equipment containing data will be wiped within 48hrs, and any identifying information is removed. If the equipment is unsuitable for reuse or beyond repair, we dismantle it into its component parts for recycling.

What items can you accept?

We accept all types of electrical and electronic equipment, whether functional or not. Check out guide to assets we can collect on the page below.

This includes, but is not limited to – desktops (PCs), laptops, servers, tablets, monitors (CRT and TFT), UPS units, cables, keyboards, printers, photocopiers, shredders, projectors, phones, and phone systems. Additionally, we handle industry-specific items such as video, photographic, audio, and conferencing equipment, educational hardware, test and development devices, medical devices, solar panels, and related equipment.

There is no limit to the volume we can collect, and we frequently decommission equipment from schools, colleges, data centres, offices, and classrooms.

Do you need an exact list of equipment?

Whilst an exact list is helpful, we do not require an accurate list of the equipment to collect from you, just an indication.

What are the items that qualify for free collection?

Qualifying items are Desktops (PCs), servers and laptops. These need to be complete, and not activation/cloud locked. Some select rack-mountable units are also qualifying items. If you have fewer than ten items to collect, please contact us for a quote.

What items do you not accept?

At present, we do not accept fluorescent tubes/lights, light bulbs and plastic/cardboard packaging (unless this is the original equipment packaging). We can however advise on the correct methods to recycle these items.

FAQs about charges and equipment
Is the service free?

In most instances we offer a free service, however, this depends on the number and type of items to be collected. There are also charges for recycling certain items (see chargeable items).

We also charge to supply a new or replacement Zero Bin, and a cleaning charge if the bin is damaged. See the Zero Bin page for more information on these charges.

How can I pay for the service?

If there’s a charge, then we’ll email you an invoice which you can then pay securely online via PayPal, Credit/Debit card (via the included link), or by bank transfer (using the bank details provided on the invoice. If dropping items to us in person, you can pay via card.

The Zero Bin can also be ordered online. Please note, we do not currently accept cash or cheque.

Is there a charge for data destruction?

Our standard data destruction service is free of charge, but for organisations requiring end-to-end asset tracking, we offer an enhanced service that includes a full audit trail and a Enhanced Certificate of Destruction for each individual device/disk. The cost for tracking and certifying each disk/drive is £5 (ex-VAT).

The process of hard drive destruction…

It is important to properly erase all sensitive data when you dispose of redundant IT assets. Here’s a quick look at three methods we use at Zero Tech Waste: data wiping, degaussing, and shredding. Each method has its own benefits, depending on your priorities for security and sustainability.

Data Wiping

Data wiping is the preferred, and eco-friendly method for securely erasing sensitive information. Overwriting data on hard drives and other storage devices ensures the information cannot be recovered or accessed by others. This approach also allows equipment to be reused, reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability.

Degaussing

Degaussing is a process that destroys data on devices such as hard drives, by eliminating the magnetic field. While highly effective at destroying data, it renders the device unusable and is less environmentally friendly compared to data wiping.

IT Asset shredding

Shredding physically destroys IT assets by breaking electronic devices into fragments no larger than 6 mm. This process completely destroys the hard drive’s platters, mechanisms, and electronic components, ensuring that all data is irretrievable.

We’re here to help, and will advise you on the most appropriate method for your needs.
