Back Market and Zero Tech Waste launch unique obsolete computer campaign

Back Market, the global marketplace for refurbished technology, has partnered with Reading based Zero Tech Waste the UK’s pioneering carbon-negative IT asset recycling company, to launch a unique initiative: the obsolete computer campaign. The campaign transforms decommissioned corporate laptops into high-quality refurbished devices, extending their lifecycle and bringing the principles of the circular economy to consumers across the UK. The campaign focuses on laptops that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 once Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 in October 2025.
The Obsolete Computer demonstrates how business IT assets, often destined for recycling, can instead be securely refurbished and reintroduced into the market. Devices collected by Zero Tech Waste undergo rigorous refurbishment and testing, are data-wiped to NCSC approved standards, and are installed with ChromeOS Flex. Each package includes a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad T470, a UK-standard charger, and supporting setup materials, offering reliable and sustainable computing for everyday users.
The partnership aims to tackle two pressing challenges in technology: reducing electronic waste and increasing digital accessibility. By extending the lifespan of business-grade hardware with alternative software, the obsolete box campaign supports students, remote workers, and budget-conscious users, while reducing demand for the manufacture of new devices.
“This campaign shows how innovative collaboration can bring circular economy principles to life,” said Ollie Taylor, Chief Executive Officer of Zero Tech Waste. “By working with Back Market, we’re giving business laptops a second life and proving that sustainable technology can deliver real benefits for both people and the planet.”
(Reading based) Zero Tech Waste works with organisations across education, healthcare, finance, and the public sector, securely collecting and processing IT assets nationwide. Through this new campaign, suitable devices are channelled directly into the obsolete box, giving corporate clients clear visibility into the extended use of their technology and demonstrating measurable environmental impact.
The obsolete box campaign will run in the UK from September 15 to November 15, 2025, or while stocks last, and is available exclusively via Back Market.
