Why “sustainable” doesn’t mean the same thing to every recycler
Many IT recycling providers describe their services as sustainable. The word appears in marketing copy, on landing pages, and in tender responses. It is used so broadly that it has become genuinely difficult to evaluate. One provider’s definition amounts to collecting equipment in a compliant way and handing it off to a licensed processor. Another’s means prioritising reuse, processing everything in the UK, and operating carbon negative across every part of the business.
These are not the same thing. This article sets out the specific criteria that distinguish genuinely sustainable IT recycling from services that meet only the legal minimum, what questions to ask any provider, and how we approach each one at Zero Tech Waste.
Why WEEE compliance alone is not enough
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations set out the baseline that any licensed IT recycler in the UK must meet. Compliance with those regulations is a legal requirement, not a sustainability standard. A provider can hold all the right registrations and still send equipment to low-value material processing streams, export devices for handling in countries with weaker environmental protections, or operate with a significant net carbon impact.
Genuine sustainability in IT recycling means going further than compliance across several dimensions: what happens to each device, where it is processed, what the carbon position is, and whether any of it can be evidenced.
Criterion 1: reuse before recycling
The most important question to ask any provider is what they do with equipment that still has working life left. A laptop that is three years old and in reasonable condition can often be refurbished and returned to use. Sending it straight to material recovery destroys the value that was already invested in manufacturing it. A provider that processes all collected equipment through material recovery, regardless of condition, is not operating sustainably. Every device we collect is assessed for refurbishment potential before any recycling decision is made. Where a device can be returned to active use, that is always the outcome we pursue. When you are evaluating an IT recycling provider, ask specifically: what percentage of equipment you collect is directed to reuse or refurbishment, and what percentage goes directly to material recycling? If the answer is unavailable or approximate, that tells you something.
Criterion 2: processing in the UK
Equipment exported for processing in countries with weaker environmental regulation can end up in informal operations that cause serious environmental and human harm. This is a well-documented problem in the global e-waste sector. A provider that exports devices for processing, even to licensed facilities, is transferring responsibility rather than taking it.
UK-based processing gives businesses confidence that the environmental standards applied to their equipment are consistent with their own obligations and values. All equipment we collect is processed in the UK. We do not export devices for handling, and we never have.
Criterion 3: a verified carbon position
Processing IT equipment generates carbon. Collection logistics generate carbon. A sustainable provider should be able to account for its carbon impact and demonstrate what it does to address it. We explain the difference between carbon neutral and carbon negative in more detail separately, but the short version is – net zero means a provider has balanced its carbon output to zero. Carbon negative means the net impact goes further, removing more carbon than is produced.
We operate as a 100% carbon-negative business. That is achieved through efficient processing operations, the use of electric vehicles for collections wherever possible, and verified carbon offsetting. It is not a claim we assert and then qualify away. If your provider cannot explain their carbon position clearly and specifically, that is worth probing.
Criterion 4: zero landfill
Some equipment is difficult or costly to process. Components with low commodity value, or those that require specialist handling, can be directed to landfill by providers who do not take full responsibility for downstream outcomes. A provider committed to genuine sustainability should be able to confirm what happens to all material streams after processing, not just the straightforward ones.
We send nothing we collect to landfill. All material streams are documented, tracked, and directed to authorised downstream processors. That applies to straightforward high-value equipment and to the less obvious items that other providers sometimes overlook. Data centre decommissioning is a good example. Alongside servers and networking equipment, a full decommission typically involves cooling infrastructure, racking, cabling, and peripheral hardware. We handle all of it, and none of it goes to waste.
Criterion 5: evidenced, not just asserted
Any provider can describe itself as sustainable. The difference lies in whether the claim is supported by documentation, third-party accreditation, and transparency. Certificates of Recycling and Data Destruction should account for individual devices. Environmental Agency licences should be current and verifiable. The provider should be willing to explain their processing practices in specific terms, not just in general language.

Questions to ask any IT recycling provider
Before committing to a provider, the following questions will help you separate a genuine sustainability position from a marketing claim:
- Where is equipment processed, and can you confirm it does not leave the UK?
- What is your policy on devices that could be refurbished? What proportion of collected equipment goes to reuse versus material recycling?
- What is your carbon position, and how is it verified?
- Can you confirm that none of the equipment you collect goes to landfill?
- What documentation will we receive, and does it account for individual assets?
- Are your environmental licences and accreditations current and verifiable?
A provider that cannot answer these questions clearly and specifically is unlikely to meet the standard that responsible IT recycling requires. Vague or qualified answers are themselves informative.
